City Layout & Districts

Nizhny Novgorod is located at the confluence of the Oka and the Volga rivers. The Oka river flows into the Volga and divides the city into two parts. The Upper City of Nizhny Novgorod (upland part) is located on the hilly eastern (right) bank of the Oka and includes three of the eight city districts (Nizhegorodsky, Sovetsky, and Prioksky). The Lower City of Nizhny Novgorod (part over the river) occupies the low (western) side of the Oka and includes five city districts (Kanavinsky, Moskovsky, Sormovsky, Leninsky, and Avtozavodsky).
